Report: Renewable energy growth falls short of climate goal

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 06:05:43 GMT

BERLIN (AP) — Deployment of new wind and solar power plants needs to be drastically ramped up by the end of the decade to meet the world’s climate goals, the International Renewable Energy Agency said Tuesday. In an advance preview of its annual report on the global shift from fossil fuels to clean energy, the agency said renewables accounted for 83% of new power generation last year. Worldwide, the share of installed power generation coming from renewables reached 40% in 2022, it said. But in order to halve greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and put the world on track to cap global warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit), existing targets for renewable power deployment would need to be more than doubled, the Abu Dhabi-based agency said.Governments agreed in the 2015 Paris climate accord to limit the global temperature rise to 2 C (3.6 F) — ideally no more than 1.5 C — above pre-industrial averages. The lower target would prevent significant harm from climate chang...

Push in states for $20 minimum wage as inflation persists

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 06:05:43 GMT

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Just years after labor activists persuaded a handful of states to raise their minimum wage to $15 per hour, workers initially thrilled with the pay bump are finding their hard-won gains erased by inflation.New York City resident Anthony Rivera, 20, who sorts packages at a United Parcel Service facility in Brooklyn, said he had to take a second job at a grocery store after his food costs soared.“I was sitting at $15 an hour at UPS, and when it came to paying bills and buying groceries, it was starting to become not enough,” he said. “That led me to no other option than to pick up another job.” New York, California and Massachusetts are among states where pro-labor forces are now pushing proposals that, if approved, would boost minimum wages to $20 or more in the coming years.Inflation has meant that something that cost $15 in 2012 — when labor activists adopted the “Fight for $15” slogan in a push for wage hikes — would probably cost almost $20 today, according to...

Where the Bulls stand in the playoff race with 7 games left

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 06:05:43 GMT

LOS ANGELES — In what has been a relatively positive stretch for the team, Monday night was a dud, but their chances to keep playing after the regular season remain strong. Despite a 124-112 loss to the Clippers in Los Angeles, the Bulls still hold a cushion for the tenth and final play-in spot in the Eastern Conference with seven games to go. As of Tuesday morning, the team is three games ahead of the Wizards, who currently are out of the playoff picture in 11th place. The Pacers sit a half-game behind Washington as both of those squad's chances to make the play-in tournament have dimmed.A 10-6 record after the All-Star break has helped the Bulls' cause as they make their way through a very inconsistent season where they've failed to get to the .500 mark since the opening weeks of the season. Billy Donovan's team still has a chance to climb a bit in the standings as they finish out the final seven games between now and their April 9 finale against the Pistons at the United Center. ...

Does Texas require cars have both front, back license plates?

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 06:05:43 GMT

AUSTIN (KXAN) — As residents continue to relocate to Austin in droves, more people means more cars out on Texas roadways. Occasionally, that means you might spot a vehicle without a front and back license plate. But is that legal? According to the Texas Transportation Code, the answer is no — but an error from a decade ago has continued to create confusion surrounding the rule up to the present day. How did ‘Texas, Our Texas’ become the official state song? Under the Texas Administrative Code, most vehicles must display two license plates, with one on the front and a second on the rear of the vehicle. License plates need to be "clearly visible, readable, and legible," as well as "securely fastened" on both ends of the car. The same applies to temporary plates. But back in January 2012, a revision to the Texas Transportation Code accidentally removed a provision that mandated penalties for vehicles without both plates, according to the Fort Worth-based Barnett, Howard & Williams ...
