A storm system gliding across Northern California is expected to bring scattered showers to the Bay Area on Sunday and another foot or two of snow to the already-blanketed Lake Tahoe region and the northern Sierra Nevada. The system — which should linger through Sunday evening — marks the first of two storm fronts forecast to hit Northern California early this week, further saturating soils in communities along the San Francisco Bay while adding to impressive seasonal snowfall totals over the high country. The second storm is expected to arrive late Monday and continue through Wednesday.“Rain’s going to be the story for at least the beginning part of the work week,” said Dial Hoang, a National Weather Service meteorologist. The first line of storms late Saturday night dropped about a quarter-inch to a half-inch of rain over much of the Bay Area, as of 8:30 a.m. Sunday morning. The Oakland Museum received .51 inches of rain, while downtown San Francisco recorded .67 inches of new...Mexican superstar band Mana performs in support of Pajaro Valley flood victims

Acclaimed Mexican pop band Mana performed two concerts over the weekend in support of the residents of Pajaro Valley, who were forced to evacuate their homes last week as the floodwaters began to inundate their homes due to a Pajaro River levee breach.“At the heart of Mana is the belief that our music can be a vehicle for social good,” the band’s lead vocalist Fher Olvera said in a press release that makes note of the thousands of Latino farmworkers who live in Pajaro Valley. “When we heard about the devastating storms and saw our people in Pajaro suffering, we knew we had to help. We encourage our fans to help in any way they can.”Earlier this week, Mana and singer Alejandro Fernández, both from Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, announced they will be donating a portion of their Bay Area shows to Community Bridges, a Santa Cruz County nonprofit established in 1977 that works to provide food, healthcare and other areas of support to local families.MANA lead singer Fher Olvera, left, and...Police investigate homicide in East San Jose

ROME (AP) — Rescue teams were searching Sunday for two off-piste skiers who were caught in an avalanche near Mont Blanc on Italy’s northern border with France, local authorities said. Two surviving skiers sounded the alarm shortly after the 1 p.m. avalanche on Val Veny, above Courmayeur, but low-lying clouds prevented helicopters from reaching the scene, Courmayeur Mayor Roberto Rota told Sky TG24.Rescuers were getting to the site by snowmobile, but Rota said the chances of finding the skiers alive was slim given the amount of time that had passed.Rota suggested the four skiers were amateurs who hadn’t gone up with a guide or proper avalanche safety equipment, though he added that avalanche airbags would have only been useful if rescuers were nearby and had gotten to the scene within the first 15-20 minutes.“Unfortunately, it’s 99% that those involved won’t make it,” he said. The avalanche risk Sunday for the area was a level-three “considerable” danger on a scale of five risk levels ...Rani Khedira leads Union Berlin to 3rd place in Bundesliga

BERLIN (AP) — Former Germany midfielder Sami Khedira watched as his brother Rani Khedira led Union Berlin to third place in the Bundesliga with a 2-0 win over visiting Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday.Rani Khedira was captain in place of the absent Christopher Trimmel and he broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute with the final say in a goalmouth scramble after a corner. His older brother, who last played for city rival Hertha Berlin before retiring in 2021, tried capturing the celebrations on his mobile phone.Frankfurt had created more chances but failed to put any away with Union goalkeeper Frederik Rönnow at his best for the home team.Union forward Sheraldo Becker had a fine strike ruled out for offside before substitute Kevin Behrens sealed the win after a long kick from Rönnow in the 75th. Behrens was quickest to the ball and he squeezed his shot through the legs of Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp for his fifth Bundesliga goal of the season. It stretched Union’s unbeaten run at ho...Arsenal beats Palace 4-1 to extend Premier League lead

Saka added a second in the 43rd after collecting a pass from Ben White and finishing low past Palace goalkeeper Joe Whitworth. FRISCO, Texas (AP) — The Dallas Cowboys acquired receiver Brandin Cooks in a trade with the Houston Texans on Sunday, adding a speedy veteran to play alongside CeeDee Lamb.Houston gets a fifth-round pick this year and a 2024 sixth-rounder in a deal reminiscent of a year ago when Dallas sent No. 1 receiver Amari Cooper to Cleveland for two late-round picks. The difference in the trades is the Texans will pay $6 million of Cooks’ $18 million salary. The Browns absorbed the entire $20 million owed to Cooper. It’s the fifth time Cooks has been traded, including a swap the day after he was taken 20th overall by Arizona in 2014. New Orleans acquired him for the 27th overall pick and a third-rounder that year.Cooks later went to New England, the Los Angeles Rams and the Texans in trades. The 29-year-old Cooks has six 1,000-yard seasons in nine years, with career highs of 1,204 yards with the Rams in 2018 and nine touchdowns with the Saints in 2015.
