AUSTIN (KXAN) -- Imagine being a parent and struggling to get gifts for your children this holiday season. Now imagine not having a place to call home and sleeping in the car with your kids. This is the reality for many Austin moms and their children, but on Monday, a community effort was made to provide several homes for Austin families.Through the nonprofit St. Louise House, dozens of volunteers set up apartments for deserving families, including putting furniture together, setting up the kids’ bedrooms, living rooms and even putting up a Christmas tree for each family. The circumstances are tough for many of the families moving into these homes. Often times, moms and their kids are escaping abusive relationships. Today, Hillary Deck, with St. Louise House, spoke to volunteer KXAN’s Britt Moreno about what this moment is like for families."What we hear from these families is that their child or even the mom will turn around and look at the door and say, 'I can lock my door at nigh...

PITTSBURGH — It was like old times Monday night at the Penguins’ ice arena. Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby scored goals, and the crowd was cheering for Marc-Andre Fleury.Only Fleury wasn’t playing for the Penguins, or even on the ice.The Wild rallied from a three-goal deficit to tie the game early in the third period, but two Penguins power-play goals were the difference as Pittsburgh beat the Wild, 4-3, at PPG Paints Arena. The loss ended the Wild’s three-game winning streak.Ryan Hartman, Jake Middleton and Vinni Lettieri scored goals for Minnesota, changing the narrative late in a game that had been dominated by the Penguins — and their fans’ disquiet over Wild coach John Hynes’ decision to start Filip Gustavsson in goal rather than Fleury, the future hall of famer who won three Stanley Cups in Pittsburgh and might have been here with pads on for the last time on Monday.Gustavsson finished with 26 saves as the Wild dropped the first game on a two-game trip that continues Tue...

This article was originally published as a newsletter from Ryan Grim. Sign up to get the next one in your inbox. At the end of November, my colleague Dan Boguslaw caught up with Bernie Sanders on his way into a meeting with Democrats in the Capitol, and had a chance for a brief interview. He asked Sanders if he had any plans to force a vote that would condition military aid to Israel on the country’s willingness to abide by international laws of war. Sanders responded in the affirmative. I covered the exchange the next day on Counter Points, and added that there actually is an obscure procedural tool Sanders could use to force a vote. It’s outlined in Section 502(b) of the Foreign Assistance Act, and it’s never been used in this way, but the law is extremely clear. Two weeks later, Sanders has now introduced a resolution to force a vote using 502(b). It has to sit in the Foreign Relations Committee for 10 days before it can be brought to the floor, which means it’ll be ripe in the Ne...
