Your Money: How should you define risk?

Your Money: How should you define risk? Bruce Helmer and Peg WebbWe’re all bombarded daily with warnings about the risk of investing. Buying yesterday’s hot stock. Losing your money in crypto. Crazy Uncle Harry’s can’t miss, ground-floor opportunity.A more technical definition of risk is the chance that an outcome or investment result will differ from an expected outcome or return. If you are one of the few people to study fund fact sheets, standard deviation is often used as a risk metric. It looks at volatility in comparison to historical averages in a given time frame, say one, three, five or 10 years. Said another way, it’s how much a given investment goes up or down over time, which can be a useful way to track investment risk. Other investors think risk is their fund or adviser falling short of an arbitrary index of securities, such as the Dow Jones Industrial Index or S&P 500 Index. We would challenge both of these definitions of risk. Risk is not falling short of an index; it’s falling short of your goals. Does...

Working Strategies: Summer job search for new graduates

Working Strategies: Summer job search for new graduates Amy LindgrenCongratulations graduate! You finished school — got a job yet?(Wince). Those may not be the exact words people say to new graduates, but they’re pretty close. Even when the question is better-phrased, it’s still wince-worthy to be asked about future plans within seconds of being congratulated. That doesn’t change the value of the question: What are your plans, exactly? If the answer is something vague like, “I’m going to hang out for a while and then probably look for a job,” you should expect follow-on questions. For the empathetic listener, the answer sounds too similar to, “I don’t know what the heck I’m doing and it scares me to death.”Try this answer instead: “I’m going to take the month of June to be with my friends before everyone starts working. Then I’ll start my job search using this 12-step plan I read about in the paper.”Another wince might be called for here, based on that answer sounding so pat. Even so, just knowing you have a plan is enough for most ...

California Doctor who drove family over cliff needs to be held accountable: DA What was going through Dharmesh Patel's mind when he, according to investigators, intentionally drove his entire family over a San Mateo County cliff and crashed their Tesla into the rocky beach below? A search warrant affidavit was unsealed this month revealing what Patel told emergency responders who airlifted the family of four to trauma centers on January 2. District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said it was an "absolute miracle" that Patel, his wife, and their two young children survived a 300-foot plunge from the cliff at Devil's Slide on the Pacific Coast Highway. What we know about the Pasadena doctor accused of driving his family off a cliff Patel’s defense attorney told a judge that Patel’s wife no longer wants him to face any charges. Prosecutors said it's not uncommon for domestic violence victims to become uncooperative. Wagstaffe said, in about 80 percent of domestic violence cases, the victim will recant their statements and not want the case to move forward. "It's part...

What's next on the debt ceiling: Selling the plan and making a deal into a law WASHINGTON (AP) — After weeks of negotiations, President Joe Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy have announced an “ agreement in principle ” to raise the nation’s debt ceiling and avoid a potentially catastrophic default. The agreement includes spending cuts demanded by Republicans, but it is short of the reductions in the sweeping legislation passed by the Republican-led House last month. To reduce spending, as Republicans had insisted, the package includes a two-year budget deal that would hold spending flat for 2024 and impose limits for 2025. That's in exchange for raising the debt limit for two years, until after the next election. It also expands some work requirements for food-stamp recipients and tweaks an environmental law to try to streamline reviews to build new energy projects.Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has said the United States could default on its debt obligations by June 5 if lawmakers do not act in time to raise the federal debt ceiling.A look at what’s next a...
